Program Coordinator, Pinchot Institute for Conservation
Dec 3, 2010
Deadline: Open until filled

The Pinchot Institute for Conservation is hiring a Program Coordinator for its Upper Delaware River watershed program. The Pinchot Institute has a robust and growing program in the watershed, an area that includes NE Pennsylvania, NW New Jersey, and south-central New York. The Institute's projects in the region are focused on community collaboration, forest conservation, water quality, and the development of new ecosystem service market/incentive approaches to maintaining water quality and conserving forests.

The Program Coordinator will be responsible for implementation and expansion of two major projects of the Institute, along with development of new projects within the context of the Upper Delaware River programs. The existing projects are the Delaware River Clean Water Fund and the Common Waters Partnership.

Delaware River Clean Water Fund

The Clean Water Fund is an innovative program to link forest conservation and the water quality benefits that forests provide with downstream water users. The Upper Delaware River Watershed is the headwaters of the source water supply for the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas, providing water to over 17 million people. The Clean Water Fund program seeks to implement forest conservation and management projects upstream, while developing ongoing funding mechanisms with downstream water users.

The Program Coordinator will be responsible for:

* guiding the implementation of the forest conservation program in the Upper Delaware River Basin, including administration of Clean Water Fund landowner contracts and grant programs;

* assist in efforts to develop relationships with downstream water users;

* coordinating and carrying out outreach efforts to expand participation and support for the program; and

* additional fundraising for the program through foundation and corporate grants as needed.

Common Waters Partnership

The Common Waters Partnership is a multi-stakeholder collaborative of governmental and non-governmental agencies and organizations in the Upper Delaware River watershed. All of the Pinchot Institute programs in the watershed operate under the umbrella of the Common Waters Partnership. These include the Clean Water Fund and an ongoing dialog on Marcellus shale gas drilling issues. The Program Coordinator must have excellent facilitation, public speaking, and project management skills and experience working with diverse stakeholders.

The Program Coordinator is responsible for:

* maintaining and growing the partnership,

* developing new project work in coordination with partners,

* implementing existing projects, and

* fundraising to support ongoing and new programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

* an understanding of the connections between forest health and water quality;

* 3+ years of experience working in conservation finance, forest conservation, natural resource management, or related field;

* a working knowledge of private landowner conservation programs;

* experience with fundraising (corporate fundraising is a plus);

* experience building, maintaining, and expanding partnerships with diverse stakeholders

* excellent leadership, organizational, and communications skills;

the ability to write clearly and concisely;

* the ability to work independently and as a part of team to successfully implement a common strategy; and

* willingness to travel around the Delaware River basin on a frequent basis.

An advanced degree in a related field is desired, but not required.

Salary commensurate with experience.

The Program Coordinator ideally will be located in NE Pennsylvania or western New Jersey. The exact location is flexible. Moderate travel within the Delaware River Basin, especially the upper portion of the basin (NE Pennsylvania, NW New Jersey, and south-central New York), is required. Occasional trips to the Pinchot Institute's Washington, DC office will also be required. Benefits include 15 days of annual leave, 10 federal holidays, medical leave, health & disability insurance, and other benefits.
