Exploring PEFC Endorsement As An Option for Oregon
In April 2006 the Institute completed a study of the policies,
programs, and forest management practices on all of Oregon's 28 million
acres of federal, state, private, tribal, and local government
forestland. The study's goal was to evaluate the feasibility of
an "Oregon Certification Standard," meaning that wood products grown
under the state's current forest management standards could be
certified by the international Programme for the Endorsement of Forest
Certification (PEFC).
PEFC is an umbrella organization of independent forest certification
systems from around the world, and Oregon would be the first U.S. state
to earn PEFC certification. Such a broad seal of approval would set
Oregon's forests apart in the global marketplace.
